Explore the World of Oriental Religion: What Makes Westerners Become More Connected to Buddhism?

Religion has been subject to great debates throughout history – and has even started wars. Nowadays, studies have shown that individuals are keener on exploring different religions than the ones they were born into, with particular attention paid to Eastern ones such as Buddhism.

Buddhism has seen a surge in popularity in the West, according to a recent study. Some followers are devoting their lives to Buddhism and its principles by adopting the culture, beliefs, and values. Others are still attached to their former religion and its parables, but they’re also likely to read Buddhist books before going to bed and practice meditation.

In academic papers, they are referred as ‘night-stand Buddhists’.

The question must be asked: What makes some driven to open the doors of eastern spirituality? Ratnaprabha, 69, a teacher at North London Buddhist Centre, found his way to Buddhism while in university. What initially started as a coping mechanism to relieve stress before his final exams turned into regular Buddhist meditation sessions, and eventually a complete conversion – including changing his name.

“I went to learn meditation and then I discovered that it was Buddhist meditation, and I was very impressed by the meditation teacher, so I thought that this is what I need,” said Ratnaprabha, who was wearing a Buddhist robe and necklace. “And I wasn’t referring strictly to the meditation, but the rest of Buddhism, as well.”

According to recent statistics, almost 0.4 percent of the population in the UK define themselves as Buddhists. People have become particularly more interested in foreign spirituality during lockdown.

Jane Doe, who didn’t want to supply her real name, believes that Christianity may lock up individuals from expressing themselves than other Eastern religions, by being stricter and more rigid. She started embracing the teachings of Eastern spirituality after seeking explanations on death and reincarnation, as she was dissatisfied with the principles of her religion.

“I’ve come to realise that we are the ‘actors’ and creators of our own destiny, that we should take more care of our own body as well as mind and that there is a close link between body and mind. We have the power over our own mind and there is a wide variety of ways in which we can ease our restless mind and tend to our body,” she said.

In Ratnaprabha’s words, Buddhism is very much linked to principles such as working on yourself and finding a path.

“Buddhism is different from other religions, it is not based on a creator, who people believe created the world or who judges you, who rules the universe, all kinds of things. It is more about working on yourself and your society to make the world a better place,” he said.
