Beyond the War – Ukraine’s Key to Success in London’s Fashion Industry

Whether you think about London as a kaleidoscope of artists – from musicians, painters, to fashion designers, one thing is certain - In times of insecurity and pain, we need to stand together for the things that matter the most!

After the war’s outburst in Ukraine, around 174,000 Ukrainians have found shelter in the UK under the Ukraine Family Scheme and Ukraine Sponsorship Scheme, latest research shows. And with so many deciding to build up a fresh start, some even moved their businesses in the UK, too.

The apparel retail market has seen a growth by 23 percent in 2022, and London currently hosts one of the most diverse fashion styles. Many Ukrainian brands were embraced by Londoners thanks to their unique and creative tailoring, and although many fashion houses are working under disruption of air sirens and shelling, the industry continues to expand. Luxury brand manager for Chanel Anastasia Demchuck shared with Alt-Natives that people are now keener on buying from Ukrainian brands because Ukraine has gained a significant recognition internationally for their high-quality items.

“The community in London and the UK is always active to promote Ukrainian brands and crafts. Fashion fairs, events and festivals are organized frequently, engaging wider communities; with some of them being UA in UK community and UFD London,” she said.

Student Sofia Torrezan Ramalho de Brito, 19, thinks that it is imperative to support foreign fashion designers, so it will have a significant impact on diversity and make the fashion field less monopolised.

“I think by buying from Ukrainian fashion designers, we don’t only help them financially, but we also acknowledge their work and celebrate their skills and art. I believe that it is crucial to celebrate their heritage, the fashion industry has always been too westernized and we barely explore any other cultures,” she said.

Demchuck said she has observed that since the war started in Ukraine, the West side has started to pay more attention towards the country, especially fashion-wise

“Needless to say, Ukrainian designers have started to promote their products abroad. Hence, I believe that Londoners not only support their fashion industry, but they’re also discovering unique products,” said the luxury brand manager.
